Installation of a new Driveway is a process which should be discussed and planned in much more detail than some seem to think.
A New Driveway is a vital part of any property and done correctly should be the focal point of any properties exterior and is the first impression visitors or future buyers will have of you and your property and therefore some detail really has to be implemented rather than just installing any run-off-the-mill paving system.
Try to compliment your property with your new Driveway, for example an old cottage type property should probably consist of a tegula paver or a cobble type paver to compliment and keep the aged appearance of a house. A modern property perhaps would benefit more from a more contemporary modern paving stone scubas a Tobermore Shannon block or a Marshalls Elise or Savannah Paver.
Of course a popular block is and perhaps always will be a regular block paving system or Monoblock system, this is also completely fine and one which can still compliment a new property perfectly at times.
These are just a select few of the considerations required when installing a new driveway and sometimes apply to new landscaping projects too, there a lots more to consider but each and every property is usually different and therefore different questions need to be asked, calling us for a rough price or m2 price is possible but any price for your new driveway or landscaping project even via google earth is likely to be very vague as the above questions and many more need to be considered.
Again the above questions make this near impossible to say, a rough guide of £100-£120m2 would probably be the closest answer to that question but it can be a more but can also be less. this figure should avoid any nasty surprises. Any contractor offering prices of £50-£60 per m2 MUST be avoided, this is not a profit making statement it is merely a warning that for this price you cannot expect a driveway installed to British standard and expect this driveway to last in excess of 20+ years. it is simply not possible at this price. the driveway WILL look the same for a few moths but won’t last!
We sometimes get called various names Edinburgh Driveways or Edinburgh Paving and more, It has come to our attention “again” that several companies are living on the back of our good name and reputation, several companies are forming over the past few years with similar names to ourselves.
Now this isn’t a massive worry for us as we have more than enough work for ourselves however when certain companies don’t do the job properly nor adhere to certain industry standards then our name can sometimes be put against this poor workmanship.
For the avoidance of doubt we are…
THE EDINBURGH DRIVEWAY COMPANY LTD
We are based within The Builders Supply Company on 8 Inglis Green Road, Edinburgh, EH14 2HX.

Natural Paving and sandstone available to view in situ or direct from pallet.
View the colours and feel the paving for texture and grip.
Paving samples are ok and serve a purpose but it is much more beneficial to see them down in place. this gives the client a better idea of how the paving will be installed and how it will look.
Our Landscaped Garden is Fully accessible Monday – Friday 7.30am – 5pm and 8am-12pm on Saturday.
Virtual Offices are becoming more and more popular these days, Prospective clients are being fooled into thinking a company has a “City Centre” address and is therefore a reputable, registered and Insured Organisation, it would be highly unlikely a landscaping company would have a registered address with the postcode EH1-EH2-EH3 etc. A simple test would be to put said company address into google and watch as the “virtual office space” ads appear.
Imagine the disappointment when you visit the companies address only to discover you are faced with an empty office space with intercom and no answer. don’t be fooled!

Clients often ask what is the best maintenance option for a driveway or if there is any maintenance involved at all and should I power wash my driveway, with almost every Driveway or Landscaping job there is an element of maintenance required throughout the year, you may get weeds or moss on yo
ur driveway, here are a few ways to stop these and also a few ways to get rid of these.
Remember a Driveway done properly shouldn’t have any serious weeds issues however weeds can take root in the most unusual places so it is possible even with the job done properly, if you are experiencing more than say 2-3% of the area covered in weeds there is a problem underneath and its likely you will either have to weed continuously or get a recognised company in to re-do the whole area again. another reason why its vital to choose an established reputable company to complete these
kind of jobs.

Our most popular query on Telephone or Email is how much would it cost to fit my driveway, Can you give me a rough cost for Landscaping my Garden, How much per m2 for Driveway Paving?
An average cost for a new driveway/landscaping project is £100 per m2. this can be substantially less than this but also can be a fair amount more depending on the job.
Of course we can’t tell how much a Driveway or Paving would cost, The cost can vary significiantly depending on current state, access, requirements etc etc, unfortunately we almost always have to carry out a full site survey to quote you properly on such tasks, there rarely is a set price for these jobs as each job is different.
For example there may be limited access to Driveway/Garden meaning a hand dig (more labour time)
Sub Soil may be inadequate meaning more labour/materials with affect driveway cost.
Drainage may be required.
Planning Permissions may be required. this impacts driveway cost but only for any planning permission application costs.
Skip may have to sit in certain position further away from job (more labour time)
Materials may be further from the job than normal.
excavation will vary for every job meaning less skips or more skips.
There are various things than can add to the cost of a driveway project, but rest assured whilst we are not the cheapest (and dont ever intend to be) we provide value for money and build you a Driveway or Landscaping Project that will last the test of time and our client referrals and testimonials reflect this.

In the Paving and Landscaping industry clients are apprehensive, we get this! We are Edinburgh’s most trusted and most popular driveway & Landscaping company for a reason, the reason is we do things properly, we dont cut corners, unfortunately for some clients the proper care isn’t taken when choosing the correct contractor, because the driveway 6 doors down looks great when its first installed doesn’t mean a thing! its 6 years down the line clients need to be examining the work, our oldest (monoblock) driveway on Walker Drive in South Queensferry was done early 1980 (Peter’s first job with the company) and still stands strong even today. it is imperative you choose the right contractor for this work (doesn’t have to be us) as its a very important decision, whether or not you think you will be in this home in 5-10 or 15 years is irrelevant, you will come to sell at some point and any perspective buyer needs to pull up outside your home and see the quality of a driveway that is NOT going to need done in a year or two, a driveway without weeds, a driveway that isn’t sinking, a driveway that is going to last the test of time and still looks great, this is what we call “Kerb Appeal”
We take absolutely no pleasure in the horror stories we see and hear everyday of driveways sinking in and around Edinburgh, we are currently fitting in Corstorphine and the lady hired a GARDENER to fit her very very expensive Indian Sandstone! we are doing the driveway and after that fixing the paving, we done an almost identical paving job in West Lothian at a cost of around £3,000!!. this of course is on top of what she had already paid. please be wary folk! check these companies out on companies house! are they even a registered company? are they insured?
We also don’t get involved in praising or decrying our competitors, it’s astonishing the calls we receive asking if this or that company is trustworthy! of course we can’t and won’t comment on any of our competitors workmanship, do so so would be foolish and unprofessional.
p.s…The picture above is a marketing picture from Tobermore (full permission is granted to use this) and not a driveway done by ourselves, we just like the picture 😉
As part of our service we provide (and always have) a post installation inspection, should you look out your window one day and see one of our team peering at your driveway please do not be alarmed, periodically we will swing by when in your area (depending on the area this may be quite often) just to check for any common faults, in the unlikely event of anything propping up Daren will be in touch to discuss a remedy. it is likely we will notice before you do and it’s important to get this fixed sooner rather than later. most driveway faults are less than one hour fix IF the driveway was laid correctly to begin with and all industry standard procedures were put in place. here a a few of this weeks “Drive-by inspections” all done well over 2 years ago. (one around 6)
should there be any major problems with your driveway the faults would usually begin to appear within the first 12 months.
We are not afraid nor embarrassed(ok maybe a little) to confess to going through a Gas Pipe last week whilst fitting a Driveway in Fife. The root of a tree we were removing was 15ft in length and when we removed the stump the root had grew AROUND the gas pipe and bang!
Pipe sealed, street cordoned off and British Gas emergency called, Fire brigade on standby
Fixed and safe within the hour.
We are a registered fully insured company, these things happen and British Gas were extremely helpful, had this not been a registered, Limited fully insured company there would have been a far longer delay and huge costs to the client. our client didn’t have to pay a penny
Moral of the story is please please make sure whoever is doing your Driveway or Landscaping that they are a “Registered Legitimate Company”
Well we already knew we were the best, however its nice to be recognised as the Best Paving & Landscaping Company in Edinburgh and Lothian , stay tuned to see if we are the best in Scotland ;).
It is just over 6 months now since our front driveway was handed over to Daren and his teams to work their magic. I don’t like doing a review too soon after a job is completed as it needs time for things to settle down and the novelty value to pass.
In a nutshell – super job, well done. Also to quotation as well as suggested timespan for the task. Weather was good apart from one bad day, so that helped, but the various teams came and did their bits efficiently and effectively. They were some of the tidiest workmen I have ever had do a job for me. Every evening before they left they made sure everything was neat as well as safe for any passing pedestrians.
The layout was designed by me – a generous driveway for two cars, a level passageway from front pavement to the back of the house for wheelie bins, three small flower beds and a little (artificial) grass. But the main feature that required the most head scratching was the path for disabled users from the pavement to the front door level, whilst at the same time curving round to give a big wide front door step. It was built to precisely the legal requirements in terms of gradient, path width etc. The previous owner of our house had illegally removed the original, somewhat basic path for disabled users, and I wanted to reinstall something better. To our amusement, the first person to use it when everything was completed was the Postman! We have also noticed that many of our (non-disabled) visitors like to use it too!
Peter was in overall control for the whole job and whilst he followed exactly our wishes, if he thought that there was a better way to do something he was not frightened to talk it over. I think one of the key actions to reaching a successful outcome of a task of this size is to discuss at the start of each day what is planned to be done. That way few surprises came along and we knew we could safely leave Peter and his teams each day to get on with things.
Apart from getting the front driveway revamped I also asked Daren and his teams to solve a water problem I had at the side of the house. In extreme weather rain would pour off neighbouring grass/woodland and threaten to swamp the house airbricks. Peter is a ‘very safe pair of hands’ and he knew exactly how to solve the issue and go about installing the necessary field drains and aqua channels.
One major suggestion from both Daren and Peter was that once the job was completed, don’t drive onto the driveway for a couple of weeks (so as to avoid any initial tyre marks) , let things ‘bed in’ then get all the light coloured sandstone Tobermore blocks sealed with Block Paving Sealer ‘Adseal Super Plus’. Superb idea. In effect like painting with water. Two coats were put on. Any tyre marks or the numerous crushed berries dropped by the birds are now not a problem. A few minutes with the garden hose and things look like new. The only downside to the sealant is that is stinks like no tomorrow! It still stunk for about 10 days after drying and then the smell disappeared overnight. That is what normally happens with this stuff. Live with it as it soon passes and is a small price to pay to keep things looking good for the long term.
Over the six months or so since the job was completed we have had a steady stream of passers-by who have stopped to admire the end result. The ‘star of the show’ – to our great surprise – is the path for the disabled and the way it blends in and brings structure to the whole front driveway.
Would I recommend Daren and his teams? Without a doubt. If cheapness is your priority then ‘The Edinburgh Driveway Company’ is perhaps not for you, but if you want a high quality job well done and that will last for a long time then give Daren a call.
14 September 2016
Was stopped in the street today by a concerned neighbour of a customer (currently on holiday) asking if Type 1 should have been put on his neighbours driveway. ‘Of course’ was my reply, apparently this company (no names mentioned but you will know who you are as I was stopped next to your job for 20 mins chatting to this guy) put in no Type 1 sub base at all, scraped back some chips and placed the sand directly on top of this, absolutely ridiculous and SURE to fail within months rather than years, really I take no satisfaction from these stories, actually feel like putting a note through customers door to not pay these guys on there return from holiday, if (or when) this driveway fails its actually going to be a bigger job to fix it than it would have been doing it properly from the offset,
If a customer offered us double to do this we would refuse, our business survives mainly through word of mouth, you can be sure the neighbours of this customer won’t be calling they guys in 6 months for a new driveway. shame!
Why do firms do this? main reasons..
1. less waste, a skip costs £180, if there putting in 8-10 tonnes of hardcore that nearly two skips of just waste alone, then another for off cuts and pallets etc
2. they would have to hire a digger for a few days at cost
3. 8-10 tonnes of decent type 1 costs money
4. digging out 10 tonnes and putting 10 tonnes back in takes time, labour costs
5. overall cost, to win the contract firms want there costs to be as low as possible,
The drive “LOOKS” the same but the base won’t last. do it right first time and there’s no reason why your driveway shouldn’t last 20+ years.
Can you fit a Driveway or Patio in winter we get asked regularly, and the answer is absolutely yes, of course here in scotland the weather can hold us back and therefore your new driveway or landscaping project may take longer but usually never by more than a day or two, major snow would usually be the only time we would really struggle
We are now booking into winter for driveway and paving/patio installs in Edinburgh,Fife & Lothians, have your new driveway done in Marshalls, Tobermore, Cemex or Globalstone and let the Edinburgh Driveway Company complete that driveway/paving or landscaping project in time for the new year.
Lots of folk ask us the difference between Resin Bound and Resin Bonded Coverings
In resin bound surfacing the aggregate is mixed with the resin in a specially designed mixer. The material is then trowelled down to a smooth finish similar to a screed (with no loose stones). Depths are specified depending on use, normally 12mm, 16mm, 18mm or 24mm.
Resin bonded surfacing is a scatter system which provides texture and the appearance of loose gravel.
A layer of resin applied to a suitable surface and covered with loose aggregate. Once cured the remaining loose stones are removed. Thickness is governed by aggregate size. i.e. 1-3mm aggregate will have a nominal depth of 4mm.
There are benefits to both, Resin Bonded would give more grip on foot and Resin Bonded perhaps looks more finished and smooth.
In most cases yes!
How much does this cost? It varies depending on your local authority but it can be circa £1,000+vat if done properly through the correct channels which we would always recommend.
In most cases all we require the client to do is choose your local authority below, print off the notice to apply certificate and fill this in. Then kindly email this to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will take care of the rest on your behalf.
Lowering a kerb in Edinburgh, fife or Lothians needn’t be a hassle to you, allow The Edinburgh Driveway Company to complete the process for you .
Take a look at links below to ascertain which requirement each authority needs…..
Companies often asked the best way to look after a new mono block driveway, the easiest and simplest way to do this is to power wash your new block paving on a semi regular basis.
Whilst power washing your new driveway you may well notice some jointing sand escape from between the blocks, this is perfectly normal and you should continue doing so, once power washed completely allow the driveway to dry out completely and then using dry kiln sand (£4 odd from b&q) brush new sand between the joints of the block paving/monoblock. You are essentially re-sealng your driveway each time you do this.
If your driveway is done properly from the beginning then it should be perfectly stable for at least 15-20 years so by cleaning your driveway not only will it still be stable but it will keep its colour also. customers spend thousands of pounds on a there driveway, look after it!
PS: If you want to be really pro then at this point it maybe a good idea to seal your sand IN by using a top quality lacquer, this seals in the sand leaving less areas for moss to settle within block paving and also coats it to a nice matt finish.

We are the best and the busiest for a reason, are we the cheapest? absolutely not but we ain’t the most expensive either, we give ‘you’ the customer VALUE before, during and after installation and this is and always has been the making of this company. our reputation is built on trust.
Finding a REPUTABLE driveway/Landscaping company in Edinburgh Fife and lothian may not be so easy, Stumbled across our driveway pictures on a few other companies websites this morning guess we must be doing something right! 😉
Had a little look around them whilst I was there and couldn’t help but notice on A LOT of websites are pictures taken straight from Marshalls Paving or Tobermore Paving website. one had a whole family out on a scorching sunny day drinking wine, bit coincidental the whole family were home when the company went back for pictures 😉 nice TUDOR house too.
Usually the biggest giveaway will be unsavoury driveway companies using catalogue pictures like below, a good sign is the 3 million pound property or the actors used or the shiny mercedes in the drive. be careful and ask for driveways to view if concerned/suspicious
THE BELOW PICTURES ARE ALL CATALOGUE PICTURES TAKING FROM VARIOUS ONLINE CATALOGUES AND NOT DRIVEWAYS FITTED BY OUR COMPANY, WE DO NOT RIGHTS FOR ANY OF THESE PICTURES
Nice actors walking along their driveway,
Cant think of many house styles like this in Edinburgh or Fife
Pretty Patio………Pretty girl too by the looks 🙂
Cracking Photographer! Perhaps not such a reputable driveway company in Edinburgh.

Testimonials are without doubt the best tool we have, here is another which makes us feel great and rather humble, we done landscaping in fife (scotlandswell) for a lovely couple and here is there review, speaks for itself really….
“So good to find workmen who do what they they they’ll do, on time, within budget, without trying to con you out of more! We were really pleased with our garden design and layout: the men worked their socks off and even added some extra bits to the garden (after consultation), all for the same price! We’ll definitely use the company again – finally found people we can trust!”

Spartans Benefits from old school ties
Lovely touch from North Edinburgh News to publish this article, its an article of me and my old school chum Kenny Cameron who is the community development manager at Spartans Academy.
Most of you would have heard of Spartans Football Club however the club is much more than just a football team, the academy bring in children both boys and girls from age 8 and provide them with meaningful activities throughout the year in order to keep them out of mischief and off the street, they even provide hot meals and do sterling work in the schools of north Edinburgh, the staff are fantastic and even Kenny is “ok” 😉 it was an absolute privilege to hand over a cheque of £1000 to this great great cause and the help doesn’t stop there.
The Edinburgh Driveway Company will also be funding go-karting-combat games as part of our ongoing help, we are also in the early stages of arranging one 15-16 year old boy or girl to come work with the big boys for a week in order to help them understand working life and prepare them for what lies ahead, if you have a spare 5 minutes please also watch this video of the amazing work done by all, when I saw this video and being a north edinburgh kid myself I absolutely wanted to help and so I did 😉
Quite willing to be open and honest and say EVERY flipping job has been held up this week ;-( these things happen and we have been wiped out with heavy rainfalls on all jobs this week, rain rarely plays a part in our installs however jobs this week have all required lots of cement(walling and natural paving) and rather than turn the customers garden into a mud bath we decided to call it a day on 2 days, not to worry though, reinforcement labour and weekend working required to have these jobs finished by Saturday meaning minimum disruption for our customers of only one day.
Rain rain go away, come back another day (Sundays preferably)
2015 thus far has been our best start to the year yet or certainly since I took over in 2012, sure Pops would tell me otherwise but I can remember a year whereby we have been doing 2 sometimes 3 jobs a week in January or February and all this before even March when it usually goes bonkers, this week we have been working in Craigentinny, City Centre and Mayfield, next week we are in Greenbank and Gilmerton,
This week Daren has the small matter of 18 appointments to attend, whilst the boys work hard onsite in the cold installing customers new driveway Daren is nice and warm in the van visiting the lovely folk of Edinburgh and Fife, he even had the sunglasses on at one point! smiley, don’t worry boys he will be back on site soon!!
Do you require a new driveway or landscaping project measured and costed? call us now on 0800 193 1505
Well the white stuff has hampered us a little today, perfect opportunity to go and do the repair scheduled in for tomorrow a day early, sure Mr Brown will be happy with that! after sales are something we take very seriously here at The Edinburgh Driveway Company and nor are we ashamed to admit that mistakes do happen although very rare(in Mr Brown’s case it’s a repair caused by a third party), however its the ability and willingness to go back as soon as humanly possible to help that customer that makes us the company we are, when Mr Brown is asked to recommend somebody to fit a driveway we know he will recommend us and that means the world to us.
Please choose Your Landscaping Company in Edinburgh, Fife & Lothians including scottish borders.
Landscaping Companies in Edinburgh, Fife and Lothians shouldn’t be too hard to find, finding an experienced Landscaping contractor with the relevant skills and expertise (and expertise IS required) isn’t as easy. This industry unfortunately has the bad name it does because of these not so experienced companies thinking they can do a job that our guys have been doing for 20+ years for a company who expects nothing but the best.
As I sat eating my lunch yesterday (Gilmerton road, Edinburgh) I noticed a driveway company(absolutely no names mentioned) digging out what looked like a 80-90m2 driveway BY HAND!! I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the customer, in actual fact I felt sorry for the workers too who were clearly untrained individuals, these guys were digging out practically nothing which therefore means there practically putting nothing back in for a base for a 1-2 ton vehicle to drive and park on every day for the next 25-30 years! in this industry such practices really give all the decent driveway companies in Edinburgh Fife and Lothians a bad name, yes it costs more, yes it takes longer but by putting in a solid foundation you are safeguarding your driveway for years to come, anyway I finished my cheese and ham baguette and disappeared.
Do this properly and you shouldn’t have to do it again for 20+ years, do it not properly and you will be doing your Driveway or Landscaping Project again within 18 months.
The customer (city centre) can now park right next to his front door instead of having to hunt for a parking space on his own street, Planning permission for driveway was granted within 5-6 weeks.
In the first instance you should contact your local authority for some feedback on this. It would be very unusual for the local authority to reject such a proposal but sometimes this does happen.
Once this conversation has happened its time to call The Edinburgh Driveway Company who will guide you in the right direction and oversee the vast majority of whats required.
Well they say lets keep it in the family, Daren Henderson is to take over The Edinburgh Driveway Company from February 1st 2012, All teams remain intact and quality will rest assured be exactly the same with a right first time attitude. we plan to implement a few new things including a nice new website. part of which you should be looking at now (hopefully)
Our teams all remain the same with Derek, Kenny, Raymond and John all running their own talented teams and ensuring our clients past and present are provided the service and trust they deserve. Daren will remain on site and service quotation, survey and any repair notices.
Our philosphy here at The edinburgh Driveway company will never be compromised, we are here to stay and our quality of service on and off site will continue to flourish and continue to make us the No.1 Driveway, Landscaping and Paving company in Edinburgh, fife and lothians.
